With more than four decades of legal experience, she leads the firm’s operations, ensuring comprehensive coverage of casework and collaborating closely with her colleagues to manage complex litigation matters. Her practice is devoted exclusively to defending hospitals and healthcare providers in medical negligence litigation, encompassing risk management, risk profiling and the prevention of adverse occurrences within hospital systems. She also oversees civil litigation defense for healthcare facilities represented by the firm.
In her capacity as president, Ms. Bowers actively participates in the defense of medical negligence cases, participates in case mediations, coordinates overall defense strategies and manages trial preparation, including the coordination of expert witnesses. She is responsible for the day-to-day operational needs of the law firm and works collaboratively with other attorneys. Prior to her current position, Ms. Bowers was a partner at Piper, Wellman & Bowers from 1990 to 2005. Her leadership contributed to the evolution of the practice into its current form as Piper & Bowers, P.S.C., where she continues to focus on defending hospitals, physicians and nurses.
From 1989 to 1990, Ms. Bowers served as a partner at Martin, Ockerman & Brabant in Lexington. She initially joined this firm as an attorney in 1983 following her graduation from law school. The firm was organized around two primary divisions—medical defense and real estate—which allowed Ms. Bowers to concentrate on defending healthcare professionals from the outset of her legal career.
Before entering the legal profession, Ms. Bowers built a foundation in medicine and science that would later inform her legal expertise. She has worked as a consultant for various hospitals and healthcare entities on risk management and operational issues. From 1977 to 1980, she was an assistant professor of clinical chemistry and serology at The University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where she taught while her husband was a surgical resident.
Ms. Bowers’ early career included roles as a medical technologist at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital from 1975 to 1977 and as Technical Supervisor and Director of the Department of Clinical Pathology’s Clinical Serology Division at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis.
Ms. Bowers has also been a designated lecturer for various hospitals, medical and nursing staffs and medico-legal societies throughout her career. Her professional affiliations include serving as president, past president and board member of the Kentucky Academy of Healthcare Attorneys under the Kentucky Hospital Association. She is also a member of the Fayette County Bar Association, the Kentucky Bar Association, the Kentucky Society for Healthcare Risk Management, the Kentucky Defense Counsel and SHRM.
Academically, Ms. Bowers’ background includes earning a Juris Doctor from the UK J. David Rosenberg College of Law at the University of Kentucky in 1983 after completing a Bachelor of Science at Indiana University in 1975. She holds certification as a Medical Technologist from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, while her legal credentials include admission to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and U.S. District Court.
Reflecting on her career, Ms. Bowers attributes her success to diligence and hard work along with an understanding that professional obligations must be balanced with personal and family time—a principle that has guided her throughout her career. Her transition into law was shaped by her earlier experiences managing hospital laboratories and teaching clinical chemistry; these influences fostered a passion for helping healthcare providers and entities navigate complex legal challenges.
Beyond her professional commitments, Ms. Bowers maintains active involvement in civic organizations. She serves on the Emeritus Board of The Nest – Center for Women, Children and Families in Lexington and participates in community-related activities through her church. Her affiliations extend to Alpha Chapter Kappa Alpha Theta, Lexington Philharmonic and Blue Grass Charity Foundation LLC. Additionally, she has served as honorary chairman for House Majority Trust in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Ms. Bowers’s achievements have been recognized through numerous awards. Her work is highlighted by being named Defense Lawyer of the Year by Kentucky Defense Counsel in 2023 and recognized by Best Lawyers for Healthcare and Medical Malpractice Law – Defendants. She has also received multiple honors from Super Lawyers and America’s Top 100 LLC, including distinctions for medical malpractice, civil defense and high-stakes litigation and holds an AV Preeminent Rating. Additional accolades include Women Leaders in the Law, honors from the Kentucky Society for Healthcare Risk Management and DRI and recognition among America’s Most Honored Lawyers and Lawyers of Distinction.
Born in Evansville, Indiana, Ms. Bowers is also known for enjoying time with friends and family and is an avid recreational athlete who plays golf, tennis, bridge, swims regularly, rides a bicycle and values time spent outdoors. In the upcoming years, she is committed to continuing her work helping healthcare entities, healthcare providers, their employees and agents, navigate the litigation processes while striving to achieve positive outcomes on their behalf.
